Background |
The quality of health information plays a critical role in the advancement of a nation's health and wellbeing. Recognizing this, Indonesia has made a commitment to improve the availability and quality of health data and information to drive better health outcomes. The proposed GSHS and GSHPPS activities align with global and national strategies to enhance the health of women, children, and adolescents.
The collection of quality data on adolescent health behavior, risk factors, and school policies and environment through WHO gold standard surveillance tools – Global school-based student health survey (GSHS) and the Global school health policies and practices survey (G-SHPPS) will address the pressing need for data to inform policies, program planning, monitoring, and evaluation, specifically related to adolescent health issues. This project aligns well with the WHO’s budget priorities, which prioritize advancing health science and data and improving the well-being of adolescents, ultimately contributing to the achievement of the Triple Billion targets and the Sustainable Development Goals. |
Objectives |
1)To identify health risk behaviours and related protective factors among secondary school (SMP/MTs and SMA/MA) students (including their nutrition status) as
evidence for developing policies and programs targeting adolescences, especially on school-based health programs in Indonesia.
2)To measure trends of the prevalence of health risk behaviours and outcomes among secondary school students (SMP/MTs and SMA/MA).
3)To provide the accurate data on school health policies and practices, to help countries develop priorities, establish the program, and advocate for school resources for school health policies and practices.
4)To develop a school-based adolescent well-being index. |
Study Methods |
Both GSHS and G-SHPPS will employ quantitative cross-sectional survey using a standardized scientific sample selection process, school-based selection methodology, and standardized GSHS and G-SHPPS instruments. GSHS will be self-administered by the eligible students whilst G-SHPPS will be self-administered by the school principal or designated teacher by online. Data from both surveys will be statistically analyzed using the results of normality tests and statistical tests adjusted to the characteristics (numerical and categorical) of the data. The t-test is used for numeric data (to check mean differences), and the chi-square test is used for categorical data (to check proportion differences). The result from both GSHS and G-SHPPS will be further analyzed to develop the adolescent well-being index, which focuses on four domains of health-related well-being (lifestyle habits (LH), emotional status (ES), social context (SC), and mental skills (MS)), as perceived by adolescents. The adolescent well-being index will be calculated using two alternatives: unweighted and weighted indicators. The index values will be scaled to be expressed as percentages. |
Expected outcomes and use of results |
The expected outcome of GSHS and GSHPPS is the availability of quality adolescent health data which will help in assessment of the current state of key risk factors and the protective factors in adolescence age group. This information is crucial in improving adolescent health services and, in line to WHO program output 1.1.3 (Countries enabled to strengthen their health systems to address population-specific health needs and barriers to equity across the life course, under the Top task: improve access to and quality of family planning, adolescent, and reproductive health.
The result of GSHS and GSHPSS, including the Adolescent Wellbeing Index that will be developed from GSHS and GSHPPS data, will be disseminated and discussed through a data to action seminar among relevant government agencies, including the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Religious Affairs and the Coordinating Ministry of Human Development; is the leading and coordinating ministry for Adolescent Wellbeing in Indonesia. The follow ups of this activity will be continuously monitored to ensure the proposed activity yield impact on policy, programs, and the overall advancement of adolescent wellbeing in Indonesia. |
