Quality of life, Post COVID-19 Conditions and Mortality among COVID-19 Survivors with Sever Acute COVID-19 Infection - A Multi Centre Cohort Study in Thailan |

Background |
COVID-19 has been the biggest public health threat of the 21st Century. It has impacted several sectors including from deaths, overwhelming the health care system and disrupting essential health services as well as economies, employment and the society at large. Since the beginning, as of 25th April 2022, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that there have been 505,817,953 cumulative cases and 6,213,876 cumulative deaths. For Thailand, the corresponding numbers are 4,128,038 cases and 27,520 deaths, respectively. We later learned that there are long-term consequences of the infection. Reports on symptoms that worsen daily life among COVID-19 survivors have fueled the need to investigate the long-term consequences stemming from the infection. These clinical consequences have been reported with several names such as “Long-COVID-19”, “Long Haulers”, “Post-acute COVID-19”, “Persistent COVID-19 Symptoms”, “Post COVID-19 manifestations”, “Long-term COVID-19 effects”, and “Post COVID-19 syndrome" |
Objectives |
3.1) Main objective:
To estimate the change in quality of life among COVID-19 survivors with severe acute COVID-19 infection over 2-year period
3.2) Exploratory objectives
(1) To quantify the change in a) quality of life, b) functional status, and c) incidence of post COVID-19 conditions among COVID-19 survivors with severe acute COVID-19 infection over 2-year period
(2) To investigate factors associated with quality of life, functional status, and post COVID-19 conditions among COVID-19 survivors with severe acute COVID-19 infection over 2-year period
(3) To generate a disability weight (DW) from utility weight among COVID-19 survivors with severe acute COVID-19 infection over 2-year period
(4) To calculate mortality rate at 1 and 2 years among COVID-19 survivors with severe acute COVID-19 infection over 2-year period |
Study Methods |
This is a multicenter ambi-directional closed cohort study. Those who has been infected with COVID-19 in the previous 6 months with at least one episode of severe acute infection will be invited to participate in the study. At baseline, we will obtain demographic information, health-related information, quality of life based on EQ-5D-5L, post COVID-19 functional status (PCFS) score, and symptoms of post COVID-19 conditions. Additional information from healthcare unit and the NHSO will be collected. Follow-up visits will be conducted every 6 months for 2 years. |
Expected outcomes and use of results |
The outcomes are quality of life, post COVID-19 functional status, post COVID-19 conditions, and mortality.
Use of results:
Participants will benefit from the regular symptomatic check-up that might relate to recognition of post COVID-19 conditions. At the population level, this study will provide national-specific information on post COVID-19 conditions and the mortality rate among the COVID-19 survivors. The health utility score contributes to the development of Disability Weight for the quantification of Year Living with Disability (YLD) in the Global Burden of Diseases estimate. YLD is long term impact of pandemic on COVID-19 survivors. |
